GKP ICT4D Platform @ WSIS 2003
ICT for Development (ICT4D) Platform, 9-13 December 2003 - past event With the arrival of about 38,000 visitors, the global village at Geneva's Palexpo grew into a town reflecting the overwhelming interest in the development aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT). The reactions of some of the participants echo this positive response. 'Amazingly successful', 'exciting', 'a good starting point', 'as important as the summit itself'. The Platform, co-organised by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), which was opened on Tuesday by Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey, is the single largest event at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) at Geneva's Palexpo. The Platform which ran under the slogan 'Connecting people for a better life' attracted more than 250 organisations from around 80 countries. It brought together government agencies, civil society groups, private sector companies, donor agencies and inter-governmental organisations. The aim of the platform is to showcase projects and solutions, debate issues related to ICT for development and to trigger future-oriented, innovative partnerships and initiatives. "We have achieved a lot," says Walter Fust, Director General of SDC. "We set out to create a common platform for the multitude of players who are interested in the development dimension of ICT. We just can't keep track of all the partnerships, exchanges and initiatives that are taking shape." - ICT4D Forum Programme - GKP Day - GKP Awards - Showcase Gallery - Storytelling Gallery - Press Releases - Photos ICT4D - CONNECTING PEOPLE FOR A BETTER WORLD Lessons, Innovations and Perspectives of Information and Communication Technologies in Development. This book aims to make the outstanding wealth of knowledge compiled during the ICT4D Forum available to a wider audience. It is also intended to stimulate interest and awareness beyond the core ICT circles, and especially to reach those development organisations which are still sceptical about ICT4D because of its perceived technical focus. http://www.globalknowledge.org/ICT4D
